On Simchat Torah, Major Gal, a Golani officer, was on leave for military-sponsored studies at his home. When he heard that an attack had begun in the south, where two battalions of the brigade were stationed, he took his personal pistol and drove south. On the way, he assembled an improvised team and began fighting the terrorists. He fell in battle at a kibbutz in the area.
